Designer Belinda Watson, is the owner and creative mastermind behind Binny, an Australian designed and owned label run by a small team of three.

Since the brand began back in October, 2008, Belinda has ventured from place to place during the brand’s creative and physical journey - from its roots in Tamarama, Sydney, through to Robe in South Australia and now to its current HQ in the striking Bells Beach in Victoria.“I have always been a gypsy,” laughs Belinda.

A lover of travel, Belinda admits she often finds her inspiration for her collections in far flung places. “I get a lot of ideas from everywhere,” she explains. “I have spent hours and hours in street markets abroad gathering ideas”.

With an impressive portfolio of designing for swimwear and younger fashion brands before starting Binny, Belinda is able to take the reign on the many elements of the design process, from developing the initial sketches and prints, right through to fabric testing and garment fittings. She also visits her manufacturers in India every year where her designs are brought to life.

Casa Boheme fell in love with the delicate prints and strong colour palette in the Autumn Winter 2014 range – so much so that it was a must-have brand for our upcoming launch in April.

Hello, my name is Lilian and I am a design and technology student studying textiles from Carinya Christian School Tamworth, NSW. I would like to know more about fashion design and will greatly appreciate it if you could answer some questions about your design process.

Such as:

How does the designer start the process? Who other than the designer have an input to the design/s?

What are the most important factors/things, eg. time, creative input, etc?

What is the outline of the design process?

How is final work or product evaluated? Do you receive customer feedback?

Thank you,

Lilian Chin
